Making the most out of your Rethymno holidays
The gorgeous region of Rethymno is located the north shoreline of Crete and is also a lovely old town covered with tiny streets and white washed houses. A large fortress stands above the town which had been used to defend this town from pirates. It's a popular destination for tourists.

Rethymno is also a good place to use as when looking to understand more about Western Crete. The city has several trekking and scuba dving providers for all those looking for an lively vacation.

The old quarter is a web of narrow streets draped in floral canopies, graceful woodbalconied houses and luxuriant Venetian monuments, with minarets contributing a touch of the Orient. While architectural parallels invite comparison with Chania, Rethymno carries a persona all its own.

Rethymno features a range of fun modest shops, including a good carved olive wood shop and various shops supplying door amulets and ship models created from sterling silver. The Rethymno Museum has a lovely gift shop featuring reproductions, including some modest statues.

Rethymno is full of magnificent beaches, interesting archaeological sites and Byzantine churches, lovely neighborhoods, radiant resorts and its capital, the town of Rethymno, is a really attractive city which has retained many instances of the sumptuous Venetian architecture.

One of the most alluring parts of the city is the old quarter positioned on the waterfront. The fort dominates the location, the site of what used to be an acropolis. Within the great walls were once a wide variety of complexes, but today, only a church and a mosque survive, and there are plenty of ruins to explore.

The nearby town of Rethymno has a good choice of retailers, night clubs and eateries and the nightlife is quite lively here too. The harbor has some great restaurants which serve fish which was caught locally.

Outside the area, the mountains have got a fascinating array of communities and monasteries to visit and experience. The coast near Rethymno is home to the major resorts of the area, and selecting a secluded beach can be difficult during the summer months.

Rethymno itself started off a period of advancement when the Venetian conquerors of the island made a decision to put an intermediate industrial station between Heraklion and Chania, acquiring its own bishop and nobility at the same time. Modern day old town ( palia poli ) is virtually entirely built by the Venetians . It is one of the best maintained old towns in Crete.
